iPad & iPhone iOS Update Creates Big Email Issues

Office 365/Exchange 2016 and iOS 11 Incompatibility

Yesterday (September 19 th ), Apple launched the latest version of their mobile operating system – iOS 11. Shortly after that, it was discovered that the native mail application on iOS 11 is incompatible with Outlook.com, Office 365, or Exchange Server 2016 on Windows Server 2016. Users that rely on the native mail application will be unable to send or reply to mail. It is likely, that this is a large portion of your user base.

What can you do?

Microsoft and Apple are working to resolve the issue in a future update. In the meantime, organizations have a few options to consider and most will end up doing some combination of the list below:

  • Notify your users of the issue and ask them not to update to iOS 11. If you have an MDM solution that can manage iOS updates, prevent the upgrade from there.
  • Microsoft recommends using the Outlook for iOS app, it is not subject to the issues described above. If you have an MDM solution that manages mobile apps, you can consider pushing this app to your users.
  • Exchange Server 2016 users have the option of disabling HTTP/2 in Windows Server 2016. Details are provided in the link below.

For more details on the problem you can review this Microsoft KB article . Microsoft has promised to update this page when the issue is resolved.
